Massachusetts, USA

This great city in the USA was named after Boston Lincolnshire UK. Although that was nearly 400 years ago, the city has in common with Boston UK an immense civic pride and a belief that it is THE place in the world.

Boston USA is famous for the Boston Tea Party (1773) which was a historic event in which tea was dumped overboard in the harbour as a protest against British tax and rule over the American territories. The "taxation without representation" led to War of American Independence.

Boston is sometimes known as "Bean Town" because of the popularity of baked beans cooked in molasses with salt pork during the colonial era.

When visiting Boston it's worth knowing about the Go Boston Card which is a travel pass including free admission to many of the major attractions.

Curiously, both Boston Massachusetts and Boston Lincolnshire had a problem with traffic congestion. Boston Massachusetts had a solution to this by having the Big Dig right under the city. In contrast, the small town of Boston Lincolnshire didn't get a bypass for years, even though there was a democratic landslide victory for the Boston Bypass Party. The difference is, Boston Mass doesn't have its highways budget controlled by Lincolnshire County Council.

The City of Boston has its own web site- www.boston.gov. In addition to being the state capital, it is the seat of Suffolk County, which includes the townships of Revere, Winthrop, and Chelsea. There is no Lincolnshire in Massachusetts, although there is a township named Lincoln, located in Middlesex County, and founded in 1746.

The City is divided into several districts. The North End is home primarily to people of Italian descent. Beacon Hill is where many descendants of the original settlers live, as well as many of the wealthier residents. The state capitol is on Beacon Hill. Downtown is the area along Summer and Winter Sts. The South End is primarily Greek, as is nearby Roslindale. Chinatown lies between the South End and Roslindale, and is still largely Asian. The Back Bay is named thus because it was created by filling in a bay- mostly with the tops of Boston's hills. Aliston and Brighton are connected to the rest of the city by a small strip of land along the Charles River. South Boston is primarily Irish. Dorcester is the city's largest neighborhood. Roxbury, West Roxbury, Mattapan, Jamaica Plain and Hyde Park lie to the southwest of the city. Charlestown is northwest of the main body of the city, across the Charles River, abutting Cambridge. East Boston is across the bay, abutting Revere, and is home to Logan Int'l Airport. Charlestown.

There are 9 villages in Massachusetts named New Boston. This is a list, with their townships and counties listed:

New Boston, Dennis, Barnstable
New Boston, Dracut, Middlesex
New Boston, Fairhaven, Bristol
New Boston, Fall River, Bristol
New Boston, Framingham, Middlesex, now called Noboscot
New Boston, North Attleborough, Bristol
New Boston, Rutland, Worcester
New Boston, Sandisfield, Berkshire (has its own post office)
New Boston, Winchendon, Worcester

And, as the "Big Dig" Central Artery Project, the largest roadwork project in US history, is nearly complete, the city takes a giant leap forward. The idea for this project was conceived in the 1970s and ground broke in 1991. http://www.bigdig.com/

The Boston Museum of Science is also worth noting. http://www.mos.org/
