The lizard is up against the wall

It's up against the wall, not to be shot, but simply that the iguana suddenly encountered the wall of the swimming pool's shallow end. Unable to go straight on, and unwilling to surface for instinctive reasons, the iguana had to decide between left and right. Upon going to the right, towards the steps, this puts the potential removal of the iguana from the swimming pool into a much more likely and predictable state.

Even so, at this point I would have been fairly sure that the lizard's next move would be to climb up the steps and to flee across land. However, that's not what happened.
