32 Red

Other things about the place

32 Red is an online casino and gambling place based in Gibraltar. 32 Red includes 32 Red Casino , 32 Red Poker , and 32 Red Bingo. I am an affiliate, and I have noticed a few things that are interesting about 32 Red, so I thought it might be worth writing about.Roulette Table

Significance of the name 32 Red and Roulette

The name 32 Red presumably comes from one of the locations on a Roulette wheel. You expect there to be 36 numbers, and some of them are red and some of them are black, so it seems rational.

I then acquired a roulette set. This looks like great fun and includes a wheel and a ball and a felt topped table with numbers. It's possible to gamble on "red" or on "black" or on "odd" or on "even", or on any specific number. I was surprised to find that Number 32 on this roulette table is BLACK. This is quite unusual. It's a "Las Vegas 3 in 1 Casino Set" with the term "Quality Crafted Gaming Set" on it, and also "This is not a toy. For Adult Use Only". I thought at first that European Roulette had this unusual layout and American Roulette had the non-standard layout as well as having a double-zero.

The "Las Vegas 3 in 1 Casino Set" included two roulette wheels, one apparently for European Roulette and the other for American Roulette. On the American Roulette wheel, Number 32 was indeed RED. This is an interesting observation, as it then appeared that "32 Red" was distinctly American Roulette, whereas in contrast European Roulette would have it as "32 Black". However, this is not the case generally, as those latenight casino shows on numerous British freeview TV channels show a European Roulette wheel (with one zero) and with the red/black being not the same as odd/even.32 Black in European Roulette

The main difference between European Roulette and American Roulette is that European Roulette has 36 locations on which you can potentially win as a punter, and only one "0" where the house always wins. In American Roulette, there are 36 such locations where you could potentially win, and two zero locations, a "0" and a double-zero "00", meaning that the house has about twice as much chance of winning. European Roulette is favoured by gamblers, as they have a higher chance of winning. It's also often favoured by casinos, as they like to have players who like to have a higher chance of winning.

I would guess that in Monte Carlo the roulette wheels had the single zero, whereas in Las Vegas they had the two zeros. However, my exploration of the world's gambling casinos hasn't yet acquired sufficient data to make a statistically significant statement.

32 Red TV Advertisements

In the TV commercials on British TV, a farmer is featured with a rural accent, explaining how in his surreal business he grows "Gambling Potatoes". Well, you might wonder what Gambling Potatoes are, but then he goes on to say that the gambling potatoes go away to be turned into "Chips". Very good, very witty.

32 Red in American RouletteChips, in case you didn't know, are little sticks of fried potato, as in that traditional British dish "Fish and Chips". Chips in the USA are known as "French Fries". The idea of the vegetable potato being turned into chips, as in gambling tokens, and the word-play pun linking such "chips" to the type of chips used in gambling casinos, is a clever play on words in the English language.

Incidentally, the farmer runs a mixed farm with both vegetable crops and livestock, as he also has sheep. One of them in the advert has a 32 in red on its wool.

32 Red is based in Gibraltar, which is a British place, and a Tax Haven, and is in the vicinity of Europe, catering for the European market, rather than the American market, so the choice of American Roulette seemed puzzling. It later turned out that "32 Red" was not specific to American or European layouts of Roulette, and was the general case. In contrast, "32 Black" seems to be something odd about the casino set which I have acquired!

The 32 Red Trademark:

You can't trademark a number, so how have 32 Red managed to achieve what they have? A while ago there was a legal case because the famous British highstreet bookie William Hill set up something they called 32 Vegas. They probably thought this was safe because numbers can't be owned by anyone, and the name "Vegas" refers to Las Vegas, which is a geographical place whose name is widely recycled to refer to gambling items. However, a judge ruled that "32 Vegas" was confusingly similar and could mislead people into thinking it was something to do with 32 Red, which it wasn't.

I can see both sides of the argument. On the one hand, it would be absurd to allow companies to stake a claim to pieces of the arithmetic integer range and it would become ridiculous where trademark issues got in the way where such things were necessary to functionality. For example, 32-bit processors. On the other hand, "32 Vegas" did look confusingly similar to the trading style of 32 Red Casino, and it seems a bit unfair of William Hill to have gone for that in their trading style. If 32 Red started a business calling themselves "Bill Mountain's Bookies" or "Hilliam Will's Bookies" it would be similarly questionable.

If there is good sense in this, it will be OK if people have "32" in their company name or their product, provided it's not in the gambling business, or in some way styled to look too much like the "32 Red" trade dress. Also, what about 888 Casino?. A similar issue exists with Dyno-Rod trying to own a colour. This shouldn't be any problem to freedom of hair dye, and should only come into question if some drain unbunging business started painting their vans that bright colour.

Meanwhile, if you'd like to take a closer look, we have 32 Red being promoted here in Europe and across the rest of the free world (which doesn't include the USA because of their government's puritan values on online gambling). 32 Red includes 32 Red Casino , 32 Red Poker , and 32 Red Bingo

Also note that 32 Red Poker isn't 32 Red Hot Poker, as that would be something different again. Also see the word poker and poker etymology

Summary of the differences between European Roulette and American Roulette: In European Roulette, the customers have slightly better odds as there's only one Zero, whereas in American Roulette there are two. It now appears that the numbers are red or black according to a particular form, as shown below, and this is the same for European Roulette and American Roulette, the only difference being the quota of zeros.

The unusual case is therefore the "Las Vegas 3 in 1 Casino Set" "Quality Crafted Gaming Set" which is "Not a Toy". This curiously has the baize playing surface on which all of the even numbers are black and all of the odd numbers are red. This has the downside that betting on "odd" is the same as betting on "red". Here's a summary of the numbers and colours...

Effectively, the "Las Vegas 3 in 1 Casino Set" has the cloth surface with red and black alternating in phase with odd and even all the way. The traditional European and American Roulette wheels and layouts are not the same as that and the red/black switches over at 10/11 , and at 18/19 , and at 28/29 where the consecutive numbers are the same colour. This makes betting on "odd" or "even" different from betting on "red" or "black".

If you have further ideas about unusual Roulette layouts like this, please write to me. Maybe the roulette set I have acquired is collectible. I wonder if the Blackjack and Craps also included have strange quirks relative to the usual versions played in casinos.
