Cleopatra's Needle
Also see Cleopatra's Casino! (on the Gambling Page)
Cleopatra's Needle is a remarkable stone obelisk which has been moved from where it was. It used to be in Egypt, and now it is on the banks of the River Thames in London. It's not as big as it looks in the photo, but it is genuinely very old. Flanked by twin sphinxes which are relatively modern (possibly Victorian?), it is an interesting example of mixed history. There is a lot more to tell here.
There is another Cleopatra's Needle in Central Park, New York. See http://members.aol.com/Sokamoto31/ny.htm , and there's another in Paris.
According to Wikipedia, these obelisks date back to 1450 BCE, which is long before Queen Cleopatra.
AND, John Chiarella writes:
Here's my Cleopatra's Needle page, with photos.
The site gives a little more insight into the man who brought the obelisk to New York City from Egypt.
Mr. Gorringe is buried about 30 miles from the Needle... under his own needle. Once or twice a year we launch a bicycle club ride called "The Needle To Needle Ride" that journey's from one to the other.
I hope that you enjoy my site. Please feel free to link it to your own:
