CAMDEN MARKET UNDER THREAT LONDON UNDERGROUND LTD ARE SEEKING COMPULSORY PURCHASE POWERS AND PLANNING PERMISSION TO DEMOLISH THE CAMDEN MARKET, THE ELECTRIC BALLROOM, THE TRINITY UNITED REFORMED CHURCH AND OTHER PROPERTIES, IN ORDER TO CARRY OUT A STATION IMPROVEMENT SCHEME AND A COMMERCIAL / RESIDENTIAL DEVELOPMENT. A STATION IMPROVEMENT CAN BE CARRIED OUT WITHOUT THIS UNNECESSARY AND HEAVY-HANDED APPROACH WHICH WILL DEPRIVE CAMDEN OF VERY VALUABLE MARKETS, ENTERTAINMENT FACILITIES AND PASTORAL CARE. On
emerging from the depths of Camden Town Underground Station (2003/05),
I was presented with this leaflet, which I have converted to web-stuff
as best as can be expected. It's very concerning really, because
there's no need for the supposed development. The underground
station is perfectly adequate and consists mainly of a quaint old
historic building on the corner, to and from which vast numbers
of interesting-looking people come and go. London Underground
have made it a bit more difficult by making one side of the
building "IN" and the other "OUT" but it
doesn't make much difference. As far as I know, underground
railways are good for getting people to and from places, and
should feel no need to invade the neighbouring properties!

Now
obviously we like the underground station because it's very handy
to get to the market and back but it would of course be
ridiculous to have the underground station taking over great
chunks of the market, and would be a bit like the station near
Trafalgar Square saying that there were now so many tourists
going there that the underground would like to demolish Nelson's
Column to expand the station! If there were no tourist attraction,
there'd be no people going there, so the train company would be
doing themselves out of business! Anyway, I suggest we all write
a (polite) note and tell the people in the relevant departments
that we'd like to keep Camden Market strange and interesting, and
to keep the underground station merely useful. Please keep all
correspondence polite and persuasive rather than aggressive and
accusative. After all, we like to be friendly with everyone and
settle things by diplomacy.
Update 2006/09: Save Camden Market! Now is the time to do something. See Save Camden Stables Market.co.uk and take a look at the situation. If you feel as strongly as I do, that demolishing/degrading a world class cultural heritage site such as CAMDEN is wrong, now's your chance to sign a petition and add your own comments! - Sadly, the site www.savecamdenstablesmarket.co.uk has gone
Update 2009/10: www.savecamdenstables.co.uk has some interesting discussion about the goings-on regarding Camden Market.
I'm keen to know what has happened. Someone please contact me. I have emigrated, but I am keen to help keep Camden Market alive!
