Burke's Peerage and Gentry

If you are interested in finding out your family history, you could research it for yourself or alternatively you could contact Burke's Peerage and Gentry. We are not saying who would be the most accurate, we leave that up to you...

Burke's Peerage and Gentry:

"In 1999 rights to update and publish Burke's Landed Gentry became available. After a gap of thirty years, a team of genealogists worked to produce the 19th edition of Burke's Landed Gentry, Volume 1, Kingdom in Scotland. This was published in August 2001 as a printed book and online database. English and Welsh articles from the 18th edition are available online and are currently being updated as we receive family information. At that point our new company was formed and named Burke's Landed Gentry.

Some years earlier, Morris Genealogical Books updated and published the 106th edition of Burke's Peerage & Baronetage. This title had also been out of print for some years. The book was well received and in 2001 Burke's Landed Gentry bought the rights from Morris to the 106th edition, bringing together the two titles under one publisher for the first time in many years. The organisation then changed its name to Burke's Peerage & Gentry to reflect the new acquisition.

In January 2002 content from Burke's Peerage & Baronetage was added to our online database. Currently we are working to update and expand the title and plan to publish the 107th edition of Burke's Peerage & Baronetage in October 2003. We were delighted to retain key members of the editorial team which worked on the 106th edition, including Editor-in-Chief Charles Mosley.

We have had a number of enquiries on the subject of Halbert's. Burke's Peerage & Gentry has no connection with Halbert's, Mr Brooks-Baker or Burke's Peerage Partnership. Contact details for Burke's Peerage Partnership can be found at www.burkes-peerage.com*2 and www.burkestitles.com*3

We are sensitive to the history associated with the name of Burke's and work hard to provide excellent customer service. Our aim is to focus on the high quality, accurate content traditionally associated with Burke's name".

Burke's Peerage and Gentry

www.burkes-peerage.net*1 affiliate program was with Commission Junction. Unfortunately the affiliate program has expired and so this page has been bunged up. To their credit, Burke's Peerage were .net (which is considered more noble than .com). However, I have been less than impressed with Burke's Peerage sending out circulars to people who have recently had a change of name deed, saying they can trace the ancient and noble history of the person's new name as if they have a family ancestry of that new name going back centuries.

*1 : The official site is www.burkes-peerage.net

*2 : The .com address has presumably been taken over and at the time of writing it relinked to the Barony of Fulwood.

*3 : The other address mentioned (www.burkestitles.com) appears to have fallen victim to cybersquatters

I hope Burke's Peerage and Gentry will have a reputable mode of advertising at some time. Affiliate programs are good, especially if they are long-lasting! However, some of the other methods which Burke's Peerage have used in the past have been less than noble. One of the things they used to do was to send personalised junkmail to people at random making claims that they had traced their family. However, many of these messages were bogus, as can be seen by anyone who had changed their name! The messages claimed to have traced the ancient history of the newly invented name.
