Buying your domain name is always a very concerning business, but at least at 123-reg.co.uk you can get it done without too much fuss, and without having to sign up to things you don't understand. Plus, we have found over the years that 123-reg is a domain company that can be trusted. 123-reg.co.uk says "123-reg.co.uk has the best value domain names on the Internet. You will not find a cheaper or more convenient way of buying and managing your domain names". The prices 123-Reg charge are mostly negligible, and you still have to pay the registry fee, but that's not the point. The point is that you can buy your own domains via 123-Reg without fuss, and you can trust them. Go for it!

It was UK domain names and US domain names, but the range has expanded. Make sure you buy "proper domains" though, and not subdomains.

(I'm always very wary of checking domains anywhere, but 123-reg is somewhere I'd trust more than most places! I'm a paranoid, and I trust 123-reg)

My advice is to get your www domain name first, and then when that's safely sorted out, come back to this page and make your decision on hosting.
When you are renewing your domain, renew well in advance, and check a few days after you have renewed on the whois to make absolutely certain that the domain has been properly renewed. Of course you should never let a domain expire! You should also make sure the nameservers are correct. 123-reg have been known to foul this up, but to be fair this doesn't happen very often, fortunately.

** 123-Reg can register proper domains such as .net , .co.uk , .tv , etc. They also state "We can register .uk.com, .uk.net, gb.com, gb.net and .eu.com domains". Please bear in mind these are not "proper domains". They are subdomains.
* Catch-all E-mail forwarding - It may no longer be true that 123-Reg offer free catch-all e-mail forwarding, according to a helpful contributor. However, there is a difference between having a hosting at 123-Reg and buying a domain there. The solution recommended by Zyra is as follows: Buy a domain at 123-Reg, then have it hosted at Vivostar, and then you have catch-all e-mail without having to pay any extra.
+ The 123 Reg affiliate program has a curious quirk: You are not allowed to get affiliate commission on getting/renewing your own domains at 123-Reg. However, there is a solution: We affiliates just renew our domains using each-other's affiliate links! That seems fair, doesn't it?
We get on well with 123 Reg, as they are a well-trusted domain company. However, Webfusion does not enjoy such good a press here. Their hosting has been shown to be less than reliable!
