Subject: Innovative Science Year Lecture - Manchester

I am writing to make you aware of a unique free lecture being conducted in
Manchester on behalf of Science Year, the government funded organisation
promoting science in an innovative way throughout the UK. This lecture,
which will be held on Tuesday the 25th of June is open to all students and
professionals with an interest in innovation and creativity.
This lecture, which features Christina Seilern, will open you eyes to the
ways in which science can promote innovation and creativity across many
areas.

If you could pass this information on to any other people who you believe
would have an interest in this lecture it would be greatly appreciated.

Building for Science: Fostering the process of discovery ... Christina Seilern

Building for Science: Fostering the process of discovery

Innovation and creativity are spurred by associative thinking and
comparative analysis, and the challenges of the scientific problems of today
require more than ever before an open approach to the idea of method in
order to foster the process of discovery. Christina Seilern's (specialist in
lab design and Head of Rafael Viñoly Architects, London) lecture will
illustrate how in the Architects' work science and architecture meet not
only in the practice's adoption of ground breaking building technologies but
in the way these serve their occupants to produce catalysts for innovation.

Her talk will also trace the fascinating relationship between science and
art and shed light on the way in architecture these two fields benefit from
meeting in the modern day world as they did in the Renaissance.

Christina Seilern

A graduate of Wellesley College and Columbia University, Christina Seilern
has worked as a research assistant at The Institut Pasteur in Paris and The
Centre Ecologique de La Tour du Vallat in Provence prior to her career in
architecture. This led to her interest in the role of science in design.

She has been able to learn in practice about this relationship having led
some of the most prestigious research lab projects while at Rafael Viñoly
Architects, including her most recent project, the Princeton Institute of
Genomics. Just over two years ago, Christina Seilern opened the London
office of Rafael Viñoly Architects.
